A photograph is shown with one element stripped of its colour, and you bring that colour back with three dials: hue, saturation and brightness. The picture repaints as you move, so you are judging the colour where it belongs rather than against a blank swatch.
The score is the perceptual distance between your colour and the real one, measured in CIEDE2000. Being close in hue but wrong in lightness costs you, exactly as it would to the eye. The first ten stages are free here; the rest, and the categories the browser does not carry, are in the app.
